Microphone cord's fuse blew, no more sound?

Through a large amount of carelessness, my headphone's cord is basically split open. You can see the copper and the inner wires, all that. So anyways, it came in contact with my half connected cell phone's charger plug, and blew up. It was a small flash, there's no damage on anything aside from some burning. My charger and the plug still work, even the headphones, but now my computer refuses to recognize any sort of device in it's audio jacks. When the small explosion happened, I immediately shut the power off. When I turned everything back on, my sound driver (Realtek HD) wasn't coming up. When I restarted, it reappeared, but it is like I described. Did I short circuit something?

If your head phones were plugged into the computer at the time, then yes, I would say it fried your sound card. The smallest spark in a computer component will destroy it. I would also use caution if you continue to use that phone charger, I've heard of bad chargers lowing the life of your battery on the phone. Sorry for the bad news.

Good news, I guess, would be that you can have a new sound card installed in your computer and fix the problem. Ask a few of your computer nerd friends and they can install one for you in a matter of 5 minutes. You could pick up a generic sound blaster card for 20-75 bucks at Best Buy.
