is there a difference between car / boat oil?

I have a 5.7 mercruiser and I want to do a tune and I call the dealer and they tell me that I must buy mercruiser oil since it is different from a car motor oil? doesn't sound right to me and that they want my $!!! I'd appreciate any feedback.

If your engine is still under warranty, use only the recommended Mercruiser/Quicksilver oil, using other oil may void your warranty. If your engine is no longer under warranty, use any good quality crankcase oil of the correct viscosity rating.

Manufacturers will tell you that marine crankcase oil contains additives that help combat constant high rpm use and fight corrosion, but the truth is that these additives make up less than 1% of the oil, and oil is anti-corrosive anyway, isn't it? The real key to extending the life of your engine is regular maintenance. Your 5.7L should have the oil and filter changed every 100 hrs, or once a year, whichever comes first. If you winterize your boat, do the oil change then, rather than leaving dirty, contaminated oil in the engine over the winter.

Then it should be dried completely, and fluids replaced. Once the car is dry, a complete re-lubrication should be done.

The interior of a car will not react well to be submerged either. Although fabric will dry on its own, moisture will seep into the material. It will pool underneath against the firewall and you will have a mildew smell in the car for the remainder of its life. It is the potential problems from water damage to the interior that leads insurance companies to tend to declare flood damaged cars a total loss. It is the best approach to have the interior torn out, completely dried, and replaced by a professional.
